Irving Grinnell was born on August 9, 1839, the son of New York Congressman Moses Hicks Grinnell (1803-1877) and Julia Irving (1803-1872). He had two sisters, Julia and Fanny; his uncle was Massachusetts Congressman Joseph Grinnell (1788-1885). Irving Grinnell received a bachelor's degree from Columbia College (now Columbia University) and worked for his father's shipping firm before retiring to Dutchess County, New York. Constance Satterlee was born in Wappinger Falls, N.Y. to Jane Lawrence and Henry Yates Satterlee (1843-1908), who became the first Episcopal Bishop of Wahington, D.C. in 1896. Constance was the younger sibling of Churchill Satterlee, an Episcopal pastor in North Carolina. Churchill married Helen S.
